After reading about how the makers of Final Fantasy XI put a near impossible to beat boss character in the game, and read the complaints of the gamers, I've come to the conclusion that video games can make you stupid.
Though the seemingly unbeatable boss will not prevent people from 'completing' the game -- persistent online games typically do not "end" like most single-player games -- it has sparked debate over what exactly the game's developers, Square-Enix, expect out of their devoted fan base. Message boards have lit up with disgruntled players calling out the company for failing to respect its very own in-game warning telling players they have "no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence [of playing]. Don't forget your friends, your family, your school or your work."
So these players can't control their own lives? They are blaming the game for MAKING them play against a boss they don't even have to fight in the first place. It sort of reminds me of
The Matrix Online, which I used to play when it first came out. You always had the option of fighting against one of the Agents in the game, despite the fact that you could not defeat them. However, the those who fought them didn't do so and then complain about it ruining their lives by forcing them to play the game. Believe me, I'll be one of the first to tell you that some games can be addictive and have you playing them for several hours on end. I went damn near 15 hours straight on MXO once just because I had the day off and nothing else to do.
But the blame the game is just dumb. Trying to blame a game because you were too stupid to get off your ass and go do something else is kind of moronic.
